HOYA SAXA

After 2 disappointing losses to Rutgers (did that really happen?) and Syracuse (UGHHH), the Hoyas pulled off a win on the road at Louiseville. Further proof that Rick Pitino sweats Hoya Blue. Not that there was every any doubt, though. Props to Austin Freeman for leading the team to a victory after a slow start. HOYA SAXA!

On another Hoya Hoops note, here's a great ESPN article about our beloved JTIII: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/commentary/news/story?page=johnson/100223. Enjoy!

HOYA SAXA BABY

As the blizzard raged on outside, Georgetown was on fire inside the Verizon Center and dominated Nova 103-90. In the first half the Hoyas led the game by as many as 23 points. And even though Scottie Reynolds and Nova made a decent comeback attempt in the second half they never made it within single digits. Freeman led the team with 25 points and Clark had his best game ever as a Hoya hitting 6 out of 7 three pointers. This game proved that as much as the team relies on it's only point guard, Chris Wright, they can still play a mean game without his presence on the court. I think CasualHoya summed it up best: "Maalik Wayns was talking crap to Greg Monroe with 10 seconds left. Hey buddy, you look like a fetus and your team just got your asses kicked, shut up and get on the bus."

WE ARE GEORGETOWN.

Gtown vs. Nova

After a very surprising loss to South Florida on Wednesday night, I am really hoping the Hoyas can step it up today and kick some Nova ass. They may have beat us in January but this time we have the home court advantage. Go Hoyas! WE ARE GEORGETOWN!

Here are some pre-game highlights from the team:

An Education

Yesterday I took a study break and went to go see an afternoon showing of An Education. I went to see it at this great little theater in the west village called Quad Cinema. It was a nice change from the big and overcrowded chain theaters that I usually go to. Not only does the theater have a cozy feel and a nice selection of independent films, it also has delicious popcorn!

The movie was terrific. It's a story about a 16 year old girl, Jenny (played by Carey Mulligan), coming of age in 1960s London. Her entire life is centered around school and preparing for Oxford University. Until, that is, she meets the much older and charming David (Peter Sarsgaard). David introduces her to an entirely different and exciting world. The more time she spends with him, the harder it gets to keep her focus on her academic aspirations. The story is enticing and you find yourself wanting more and more. The acting is also superb. In my opinion Mulligan definitely deserves the Oscar for best actress in a lead role! The supporting actors that round out the cast are also great. Overall, two thumbs up. I would definitely recommend seeing this movie. I'd also recommend checking out Quad Cinema if you want a change of pace from your usual movie theater.

Rigby Nation

Daniel Rigby was a friend and fellow classmate at Georgetown. In the Fall of our senior year, Dan passed away in a tragic house fire. He lived in an off campus house that was not up to fire code. Dan was one of the nicest and most genuine people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. When I think about what our purpose is on this earth, I believe that it is simply to love and be loved. Even though Dan's time here was shorter than most, he knew better than anyone how to spread that love. When I think about Dan I am reminded that life is short and you should always take the time to let your loved ones know how much they mean to you.

Every year the Friends of Rigby Foundation hosts several events in memory of Dan. The events help the foundation to raise money for scholarships in Dan's name and to improve fire safety for students. They are also a great way for all of us to get together and remember the great times we have had with Dan and one another.

In honor of Dan, I decided to enter this years t-shirt design contest for the 6th Annual Run for Rigby. This event takes place every April in DC and is a very fun reunion event. Below is the t-shirt I designed. Fingers crossed they like it! :)

If you would like to make a donation in honor of Dan and to promote fire safety, you can do so at FriendsOfRigby.org.

2 weeks Meat-Free!

I'm never very good with new years resolutions but I still like to at least attempt one positive change in my life every time a new year rolls around. This year I was out of ideas until my brother told me what his was, going vegetarian for 2 months. As I am in school for public health, I have been discovering a lot about the US food industry and learned some things that are not too pleasant about meat production and the food supply in general. Meat production also has a very detrimental impact on the environment and livestock living conditions are appalling. Thus, I decided to follow in my big brother's foot steps and go vegetarian for 2 months. The purpose of this 2 month test is to see if I really could give up my beloved meat for 2 months, and possibly forever. If you know me, you know how much I LOVE meat. Some of my favorite foods include chicken wings, friend chicken, steak, turkey sandwiches, etc, etc, etc.

So far so good. While I still crave chicken, turkey, steak, etc. I feel good about the choice I have made. The more I learn about how bad meat production is for the environment and also to a person's health the more I would like to give it up for good. For instance, the USDA allows meat distributors to inject ammonia (as in bleach) into their beef patties to kill bacteria. These distributors are supplying beef to places like McDonald's, Burger King and many chain grocery stores. Something to keep in mind next time you bight into a Big Mac! I could go on and on with disturbing stories of meat production right here in the US but if you are really curious about it I would suggest two sources to start with: the movie Food Inc. and the book The Omnivore's Dilemma. Both are really good at breaking down the food supply and showing us as consumers exactly what we are putting into our bodies.

I still allow myself to eat seafood and dairy products. My rationalization for this is simply that I cannot live without sushi and while dairy and seafood also have their vices, I think a diet consisting only of plants and nuts is a little unrealistic for a meat-lover like myself. The last two weeks have not been quite as bad as I anticipated because apparently you can still eat things like fried chicken, general tso's chicken and philly cheesesteaks if you are a vegetarian. How is this possible?? Soy!! It turns out that soy can be made into just about anything, and it tastes just like real meat! Hallelujah.

If you want to try some recipes that are a little more earth-friendly, here are some that I have found to be tasty:

6 more weeks to go :)
